Who says only Eggs Benedict, artisan coffee and over-priced soft serve make for Instagram-worthy food? Here are some unexpectedly photogenic food picks in Singapore.
1. Oven Marvel
91 Bencoolen Street, Sunshine Plaza #01-51, Singapore 189652, Tel: 9636 1503, Opening Hours: 11:30am – 6pm daily (Closed on 8th, 18th, 28th of every month)
While Oven Marvel has pretty amazing chicken pies (we hear the owner used to be a pastry chef in a hotel), it’s their muffins that are unexpectedly Instagram-worthy. Although the muffins are unapologetically simple (you won’t get any dressed up cupcakes here), the variety of colours and textures (orange peel, banana walnut, chocolate chip, apple raisin) on them make for an interesting “I’m-too-cool-for-cupcakes” Instagram photo. And as an added bonus, they actually taste good too.

2. Tong Heng Confectionery
285 South Bridge Road, Singapore 058833, Tel: 6223 0398, Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm daily
Tong Heng Confectionery is best known for its handmade diamond-shaped egg tarts, but their Rainbow Kueh Lapis are pretty Instagram-worthy too. The bakery itself looks like it hasn’t changed much since it was first a dim sum shop in the 1930s, but the pastries are top-notch. Try the Omelette Kaya Toast – you won’t regret it.

3. LE Cafe Confectionery & Pastry
264 Middle Road, David Elias Building, Singapore 188990, Tel: 6337 2417, Opening Hours: 10:30am – 7pm (Mon – Sat), 10:30am – 4pm (Sun & PH)
LE Cafe Confectionery & Pastry is a simple and unassuming bakery that has a wide variety of baked treats. In here, you won’t find any hipster coffee tables or cool baristas. No, you will just find stacks of delicious-smelling baked goods and erm, a semi-grouchy lady behind the counter (“You didn’t reserve the Bean Curd Tarts? Wah, I cannot help you if no more ah. Who ask you never call earlier?!”). If you couldn’t already tell, the Bean Curd Tarts usually sell out fast – and for good reason too. A healthier take on traditional egg tarts, these Bean Curd tarts have a silky smooth filling encased in a buttery biscuit crust. Skip the Krispy Kreme and Instagram these babies instead.
4. Ng Kim Lee Confectionery
4 Chun Tin Road, Singapore 599591, Tel: 6466 3515, Opening Hours: Mon-Sat: 9am – 9pm, Sun: 9am – 1pm.
Ng Kim Lee Confectionery has been around for more than 60 years, so those who live in the Bukit Timah area might already be familiar with this old school bakery. Besides its well-known Mini Muffins (which come in a variety of flavours, including Oreo, Pandan and Strawberry), Ng Kim Lee Confectionery also has an Instagram-worthy Zebra Cake – an interesting mix of butter, Pandan and chocolate. The pastries and cakes here are also relatively cheap – about $1 or so per slice – so feel free to knock yourself out.

5. Thye Moh Chan
Various locations, visit their website for more information.
Thye Moh Chan is quite the household name among the older generation – not because of its Insta-worthiness, but for its melt-in-your-mouth tau sar piah. Want a real #throwback? These flaky pastries will give your followers something to reminisce about.
