After the unexpected success of director J.J. Abrams’ first foray into Star Trek in 2009, fans were expecting him to capture the same excitement and entertainment value in this highly anticipated sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.

Abrams clearly rises to the occasion, as he kicks off the film with a heart-pounding chase through an exotic planet. As the long-suffering crew of the U.S.S Enterprise tries to navigate their way out of another crisis, the first seeds of discord under Kirk’s (Chris Pine) captaincy are revealed.

To exacerbate things, Kirk’s future in Starfleet is made more uncertain when a mysterious terrorist, John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), blows up a Starfleet archive in London and prompts a galaxy-wide manhunt.

The vengeful Harrison is manipulative and scarily ruthless in his one-man quest to destroy Starfleet and the Enterprise for past sins. Smarter, stronger and more deliberate than Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Kirk, the terrorist is a formidable villain whose motives remain ambiguous to our heroes. Despite Harrison’s frosty, calculative demeanour, Cumberbatch is able to imbue the character with a sympathetic presence and a deep pathos that makes the audience (and characters) question their loyalty.

The sequel is also explores the brotherly bond between Kirk and Spock, with the added complication of Spock’s romantic relationship with Uhura (Zoe Saldana) thrown into the mix. An enthusiastic Simon Pegg as Scotty and a snarky Karl Urban as Bones offers enough comic relief to keep the film from being too heavy.

Unfortunately, not every crew member gets equal chance to shine. Anton Yelchin’s Chekov is criminally sidelined, while newcomer Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) fails to serve as an effective sparring partner for Spock.

Nonetheless, the film has not lost its sense of playfulness or the Star Trek franchise’s ability to laugh at its more ridiculous elements.

When we last saw Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) on the silver screen, the billionaire scientist was defending New York from angry alien invaders with the rest of the Avengers. In Iron Man 3, things in the Big Apple are back to normal, but unfortunately not for Stark.

Having been confronted by enemies with abilities beyond his vast technological expertise, Stark is in denial of his own vulnerabilities and mortality. Paranoid, he embarks on a mission to build newer, better Iron Man suits. The result is the Mark 42, a suit with added bells, whistles and more glitches than the previous suits put together.

Besides PTSD anxiety attacks and unreliable technology, Stark also has to contend with the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) – a mysterious terrorist threatening to undo the peace our hero has so valiantly been fighting for.

Director Shane Black — who previously worked with Robert Downey Jr on the hilarious Kiss Kiss Bang Bang — brings his acute ear for dialogue and considerable experience in action films to give us a rollercoaster of a film. As with most Robert Downey Jr movies, the humour is razor-sharp and there are plenty of surprises. Even with Stark’s vulnerable state, Robert Downey Jr still manages to unleash his familiar brand of cocky charm.

The supporting characters also get a decent share of memorable one-liners and standout moments. In particular, Stark’s close friend James ‘War Machine’ Rhodes (Don Cheadle), who tries his best to juggle his military obligations while taking on the thankless role of Stark’s sidekick. In addition, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts takes on a more active role in her superhero boyfriend’s life  (albeit involuntarily), making her less of a damsel-in-distress.

Ben Kingsley gives a memorable performance as the Mandarin, even if it was not completely faithful to the comic series. Let’s just say the Mandarin holds more secrets than one would expect.

Speaking of faithful comic adaptations, this particular installment draws heavily from the Extremis storyline, so many – if not all – of the movie’s twists would be familiar to regular Iron Man readers. For everyone else though, it’s best to familiarise yourself with recent Marvel movies like The Avengers and previous Iron Man movies to catch all the subtler references.

Don’t forget to stay for the credits for an amusing scene with a new friend.

STRIPE IT OUT

Trust the fashion industry to put a trend onto every type of clothing imaginable. Not just limited to tees anymore, stripes this season come on jeans, shorts, dresses and even bralets. Full-on striped outfits have also been spotted on both the runway and red carpet, but we wouldn’t advise this look unless you’re Rosie Huntington Whiteley (or risk looking like a jailbird).

If you’re iffy about wearing stripes because they might make you look larger, try vertical stripes instead. The print is flattering, especially if the stripes are thin and the colour contrast is stark.

GO ANDRO

CLASHING PRINTS

If you’re daring enough, wearing clashing monochrome prints can actually look quite chic. This may not be the easiest look to pull off, but it is definitely not impossible. When choosing separates for your outfit, make sure that the print on your top is smaller or larger than the print on your bottom (see Scarlett Johansson below). The difference in print size will keep you from looking like a walking tablecloth. Keep your shoes simple, either in black or stark white, and go easy on the accessories.

Pick a pair of white pants or jeans made of a thicker material, so you won’t have any wardrobe malfunctions (i.e. visible panty lines aka the biggest fashion sin ever). And do I even have to mention how nude underwear is a must? Anything colourful under a pair of white pants veers into hoochie mama territory.

When it comes to white jeans, it’s best not to size down in an attempt to suck it all in. Leave that to your darkwash skinnies, we say.

And whatever you do, stripper heels with white pants are a no-no. Unless you want to look like a MILF, in which case…well, whatever floats your boat y’know?

White jeans are the perfect canvas to show off a pop of colour, so complete your look with a bright top or one with a cute print.
