Online Shopping Hacks

Because all good things should be shared, no?

Shopbop

You probably already know about the wonders of Shopbop (free express global shipping YESSSS), but listen up because here are some tips on getting the most out of your order.

Shopbop 1(Source: Shopbop)

Discount Codes

Shopbop has two ‘Friends and Family’ discount codes (usually 20% or 25% off your entire order, including sale items) every year – once in mid-April and the other in October. These are the best codes of the year, because they don’t require a minimum purchase and are just a flat out discount on your order. Don’t quote me on this, but I foresee the next Friends and Family 25% code coming out during the week of 13th April (based on historical data and trends ahem). Time to start putting together your wish lists so you can snap up the good stuff once the code goes live.

Price Matching

If you find an item for a cheaper price on another US-based site, you can contact Shopbop customer service at 1-608-270-3930 to request for a price match. This means that they will refund you the difference, as long as you meet the stated requirements. It takes a bit of effort to Google for cheaper alternatives, but hey, it just might save you a fair bit of money. For more information, see here (under ‘Price Adjustments and Price Matching’).

Price Adjustments

If an item you just bought from Shopbop goes on sale, you can also contact customer service to get them to do a price adjustment. They will refund you the difference between the original and sale price, as long as the purchase was made within the last 7 days. For more information, see here (under ‘Price Adjustments and Price Matching’).

Refer A Friend

If you refer a new customer and she makes a purchase on Shopbop, you’ll get a $25 gift certificate to use on your next purchase. This is an easy way to save some money, while also introducing/luring your friends into the black hole that is Shopbop (so you can feel less guilty about shopping online heh heh). For more details, click here.

Wish List Search

Shopbop’s Wish List Search is the perfect tool to find a gift for a friend. Seriously, I don’t know why more shopping sites don’t do this. All you have to do is punch in your friend’s email address in the Wish List Search tool, and her wish list of items will come up. You can also use this tool to not-so-subtly hint to your boyfriend/husband on what to get you for your birthday…so you won’t end up with a gift he thinks you want (read: something ‘sensible’ aka an ugly hard drive or the likes).

Revolve Clothing

Revolve Clothing is another US-based site that has similar brands to Shopbop (Clover Canyon, Marc By Marc Jacobs, Self Portrait and Three Floor to name a few) but their shipping options aren’t as efficient as Shopbop’s. However, this is a good site to check out if the item you’re eyeing on Shopbop goes out of stock, because it seems like less people know about Revolve Clothing.

Free Shipping

Revolve Clothing offers free international shipping on orders above $100 USD, but it takes REALLY long – about two weeks or so. If you’re impatient, you can opt for express shipping ($8 for orders above $100), which takes about one week.

Discount Code

Use the code ‘TULIP’ to get 10% off most items. Excludes sale items and new arrivals, as well the following brands: True Religion, 7 for All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, Paige, Hudson,T by Alexander Wang, JNBY, Diane von Furstenberg, Ash, Joes Jeans, Cheap Monday, Clu, Common Projects, Rose, Band of Outsiders, J Brand, Alexander Wang, Preen, Vince, 3sixteen, ALC, Theory, Joie, Soft Joie, Black Halo, Elizabeth & James, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Wolverine, and Juicy Couture.

Price Match

Revolve Clothing also does price matches, so if an item you’re eyeing is on sale on another site, you can contact customer service at sales@revolveclothing.com to ask for a price match. Oh, and it would benefit you to ask politely (instead of “Can price match anot?!”) because it’s really up to their discretion. It’s amazing what a little politeness can do for you. Fashion Bunker

Fashion Bunker is one of the more popular places to buy Australian labels like Cameo, Keepsake and Finders Keepers, and they offer free shipping to Singapore for orders above $39 AUD.

From time to time, they have promotion codes for everything from free shipping to a percentage discount off your order – so it’s best to wait it out until a promotion code comes along. If you just HAVE to get that one item (we’ve all been there, no?), you can try the code ‘BNKR‘ to get 10% off your first order. Also, not sure if this works for everyone but if you leave a few items in your cart and wait awhile before purchasing, you might receive an email from Fashion Bunker with a 15% off code to use on that purchase.

The Birdcage Boutique

The annoying thing about Fashion Bunker is that the nicer items tend to sell out quite quickly (blame it on the deluge of bloggers promoting it pfft) but do not despair. Check out The Birdcage Boutique to see if they have your item in stock – the online site carries pretty much the same brands as Fashion Bunker, albeit a smaller collection. International shipping is free on orders above $200 AUD. If you subscribe to their mailing list, you can also use the code ‘BIRDIE’ to get $30 off your first order.

ASOS

Ahh ASOS…the perfect site to while away hours of your time. While ASOS has pretty much anything your heart/closet desires, shipping takes quite long (about two weeks to Singapore). Luckily for you though, I snooped around and discovered that the code ‘EXPRESSSING‘ can be used for free express shipping (2 – 3 days). It only applies to orders above 250 SGD, but better than nothing right?

MANGO.com

While MANGO already has multiple stores in Singapore, the online store is a good place to check out if the item you want is out of stock (or stained with makeup). The site offers free international shipping on orders above $150 and delivery takes about 2 to 5 working days. The prices on MANGO.com are the same as the stores here, and they also offer the same promotions. The best part about MANGO.com? You can return items to any MANGO store in Singapore, so it saves you the hassle of heading to the post office.

NET-A-PORTER

NET-A-PORTER is one of those sites that you peruse often, but only end up buying something like, twice a year or something (during the sale period). If you’re placing an order that is more than $400 SGD, try not to return it unless you really need to. Orders above $400 SGD get charged taxes, which NET-A-PORTER collects on your behalf. However, when you return the item, NET-A-PORTER will only refund you the item amount, but not the taxes you paid for it (which can go up to a few hundred dollars, if you ordered a big item like a bag).

In order to get a refund on your taxes paid previously, you’ll have to go through the delivery service (which in their case, is DHL) to make a claim. The entire process takes about 6 months to a year. Yes, a YEAR…just to get your tax refunded. So yes, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

mytheresa.com

mytheresa.com is similar to NET-A-PORTER, except they seem to have a wider selection of items and brands. Shipping is more expensive though – $45 to Singapore – but they have free shipping promotions quite regularly. Also, if you sign up for their mailing list (and don’t unsubscribe), they might send you a discount code or two to use on your next order.

MAC Cosmetics

OK this isn’t really an online shopping hack, but I thought I’d include it anyway because it’s quite a good hack. If you have any old MAC Cosmetics containers lying around, start collecting them because you can exchange any 6 used MAC containers for a free lipstick through the Back to MAC Programme. The process is fairly easy – all you have to do is go to any MAC Counter and tell them you want to exchange your containers for a free lipstick. They’ll ask you to pick your colour of choice and voila, a new lippy to add to your collection.
