Clancy Boutique has been around for quite a while and owners Wendy and Cindy Ler (we have no idea how they came up with the name Clancy) have built a strong reputation amongst fashionistas. The quality of their workmanship is undeniable and it’s no wonder why some of their loyal customers will only trust them with their Pradas and Chanels.

$4 to hem jeans, $8 to hem dresses/skirts, from $12 to take in tops/dresses/waistbands
Waiting Time:
If the tailor has time, jeans can be hemmed in 20 – 30 minutes. More complicated items take about 1 –  2 weeks, depending on how busy the tailor is.
Famous for:
Good workmanship.

If you’re usually in the Bugis area, you’ll want to check out Tang Cottage at Albert Centre (the red building across Bugis Street). Seasoned tailor May Tang does quick fixes for cheap – hemming jeans only costs $4 (take that, overpriced Far East Plaza tailors!). If she’s not too busy, she can even do the job in about  20 minutes, so you can pop by before lunch and pick up your jeans after you’re done eating (try the famous Ma Bo Lor Mee at the hawker centre on the first floor of Albert Centre…worth the calories, and the line moves really quickly).

From 30 minutes to a few days. No extra charge for same day service.

Rush jobs within the day.

Michelle’s Alteration prides itself in being one of the cheapest alteration places in town. It’s the perfect place for rush jobs because her team of trained tailors can perform basic alterations in less than an hour.

Standard rate of $5 for basic alterations of jeans. Dresses with inner linings range from $6 to $8 depending on length and material. $8 for waist alterations and $12 to $15 for jackets.

Same day collection at no additional charge. For clothes that require more work, the wait could go up to 3 or 4 days.
Famous for:
Great customer service and alterations of reliable quality.

Word on the street is that Ivan’s clientele includes some local celebrities. Having been around for over 20 years, Ivan’s experience in the business is vast and his skills are inferior to none. Many customers have sung praises for this modest little shop and the man behind it.

The owner David Chan has over 45 years of experience in the tailoring industry, and his skills are top-notch. He’s also pretty accommodating if you need a rush job. Hey, even Kumar goes to him for his tailoring needs.

Replication of dresses start from $240 to $320 for made-to-wear dresses. Restyling of a dress to a skirt begins at $64 while reparation of zippers or tear at $6.
Waiting Time:
Standard waiting time is about 14 days. An SMS will be sent to you once your clothes are ready for collection. Express service is also available at an additional charge starting from $6.
Famous for:
Restyling of old clothes and replication of pieces.

Alteration Initiative helps disadvantaged women by hiring them as seamstresses and providing them with a source of income. Their services encompass resizing, restyling, reparation and replication. Bring your old clothes to them together with a sample of the clothing you’d like them to replicate and ta-da! you’ve got yourself a unique, one-off piece. Prices may be a little steep but nothing beats that feel-good feeling of contributing to a good cause.
